Movement Festival's Fantastical Looks

WORDS and PHOTOGRAPHY by Christine Hildebrand

The dance party of the year presented plenty of platforms, urban cowgirls and cowboys, body crystals, signature sunnies, cheeky weed bags and fishnets filled to the gills with a different variety of boldness.

This year's Movement Music Festival, a Memorial Day tradition in Detroit, didn’t miss a beat. Amplifying the city’s iconic Hart Plaza, the highly anticipated event warranted dancing for three days and nights.

Movement’s various stage personalities anchored by the misty aura of the Dodge Fountain kept the current of attendees churning while serving a futuristic backdrop. Funky tunes and festival fashion joined hands to realize imaginative whimsies hitting style notes across genres of Y2K, sci-fi & fantasy.

DJ legend Jeff Mills helped found the Detroit-based techno collective Underground Resistance in the late eighties. Mills describes techno as, “everything you haven’t imagined yet.” Mirroring the experimental spirit of techno, Movement’s festival fashion burst at the seams with creativity. DJs tinkered with sounds and festival goers experimented with their fits.

A highlight of our coverage included meeting DJ Holographic after her set Saturday evening near the riverfront. The one-woman funk machine wore a smart bubbly pink suit tailored to perfection. “The suit was custom-made for me while traveling in Thailand,” DJ Holographic shares. She scored the lighter pink, shapely crop top in Brazil—making her fit a reflection of her worldly experiences.

In addition to being Detroit’s dance party of the year, Movement specializes in bringing people together from all walks of life. “I’ve visited Detroit many times before but never experienced the level of connectivity to the people and music until Movement,” says San Francisco based CMF designer and mom of two, Christina Ng. The stylish mix of Detroiters and visitors alike enthusiastically celebrated the birthplace of techno and stitched in yet another memorable Movement for the memory books.

Movement Electronic Music Festival is an annual electronic dance music event held in Detroit each Memorial Day weekend since 2006.
